Digital Photo Collage Art Process

As a photomontage artist, I find my imagination has the greatest range with fantasy, spiritual, science fiction or mythological themes but beyond that, the process is the same as any collage. I read a lot of sci fi, new age and mythological material (Joseph Campbell rocks!) and tend to mix up ideas and imagery in my brain to see what percolates out of that.

Most of the photos come from Photos.com - sometimes I just browse in there to get inspiration. Then, the collage just "happens" - I tried once to write a book about how I do it but couldn't put it into words. Suffice it to say, each collage I've done consists of 3-5 photos, a great many effects and filters in Photoshop, and often some drawing and painting of my own.

For example, in Phoenix Wising, I was thinking about the story of the phoenix rising from the ashes, and the wisdom that being torched to the ground and regenerated might instill in a person. I started with a photo of a small smoky fire, an owl, a woman kneeling with hair hanging down, a woman standing with hair in a bun. If you take a look you can imagine what I did...I can never explain it after it's done.
